This funny, poignant, classic love story unfolds through a series of letters between Helene Hanff, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used-book dealer in London at 84, Charing Cross Road. Through the years they share a charming, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books. Discover the relationship that has touched the hearts of thousands of readers around the world.

Audition Information

TAODS is delighted to announce further details about our upcoming performance of 84 Charring Cross Road. All our auditions are open and you can find out more about the parts and the auditions below. If you are interested in coming along please complete the expression of interest form as this help us in our planning and preparation.

Auditions will be a relaxed and workshop based process. Those interested in in Helene or Frank will prepare a short monologue, more details will follow about this shortly.

The Characters

Expression of Interest

Helene Hanff (playing age: late 20s–40s) – A bold, funny New York writer with a big heart and sharp wit.

Frank Doel (playing age: 40–60) – A reserved, courteous London bookseller with dry humour and quiet warmth.

 

Both characters grow and develop over the course of 20 years — revealing the power of connection, kindness, and shared passions.

Supporting characters include:

Cecily – Frank’s friendly, enthusiastic colleague at the bookshop (the largest supporting role)

Megan – Another helpful bookshop assistant

Mr. Martin – A more formal, traditional bookseller

Maxine – Helene’s stylish friend in New York

Plus a handful of smaller roles and cameos

There’s potential for doubling across several of the supporting parts, so plenty of opportunities for actors to shine in multiple roles.
