Auditions Announced
We’re excited to share our casting dates for Spitfire Girls, our December play. Join us on Thursday 9th July 2026 at 7.30pm in the Hippodrome foyer for an informal get-together with director Justine to hear more about the story, roles and rehearsal process.
Auditions will take place on Wednesday 22nd July 2026* in the foyer, with a 7.15pm warm-up for a 7.30pm start. The evening will include a workshop with basic physical theatre and script work.
We're looking for 5 actors to play:
Bett - older sister (late 20s/early 30s in 1943, mid to late 40s in 1959), played by one actor across both time periods.
Dotty - younger sister (mid-20s in 1943). Spoiler alert – she doesn’t age!
Joy/CO - an ATA pilot (mid-late 20s) who also plays the Ferry Pool Commanding Officer.
Both sisters can have neutral British accents. Joy/CO may be played with two distinctive accents, reflecting the international nature of the ATA.
Tom - a serving RAF pilot (late 20s), Also plays Jimmy (any age) and Ground Crew.
Dad - (late 40s/50s) a farming widower. Also plays Frank, a regular in Bett’s pub and an Instructor at the Ferry Pool.
Number 15 Ferry Pool was in Hamble-on-Solent near the South coast. We don’t intend to push that accent in particular; Dad could have a neutral British voice and use different accents for Frank/Instructor. Tom /Jimmy could be played by an actor with any 2 distinctive British accents.

TAODS are proud to welcome and cast newcomers, so if you’re looking for a new society to perform with, we’d love to hear from you.
The open get together is a relaxed evening where you can come along and find out more about the play and what to expect from our director Justine. There is no commitment to audition and all are welcome to attend.
The audition process will follow a workshop style session. Part of this process will involve all actors taking part in a physical theatre scene involving lifting and there will be dancing.

1940 - Britain is under siege, and the skies are a battleground. Enter the unsung heroines of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) - the "Spitfire Girls."
From radically different backgrounds, these fierce, trailblazing women signed up for the deadliest delivery job on earth: flying formidable military aircraft from factories to the front lines. Flying by sight alone, and battling both treacherous weather and deeply rooted sexism, they kept the Royal Air Force alive.
Katherine Senior’s gripping, witty, and deeply moving play brings their untold history out of the clouds and onto the stage. It’s a soaring tribute to camaraderie, defiance, and the soaring heights of the human spirit.
Spitfire Girls tells the story of two sisters who join the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1943 and find themselves ferrying fighter planes across the country. With the unofficial motto “Anything to Anywhere,” ATA pilots flew without radio, instruments or weapons, navigating from the landscape below.
